Woman Hollering Creek free essay sample

October 8, 2010 English 102 Culture is the â€Å"System of values, beliefs and ways of knowing that guide communities of people in their daily lives† (qtd. In Rothstein-Fusch and Trumball 3). Every culture is different and unique in its own lifestyle. Culture is basically life itself. The short story â€Å"Woman Hollering Creek† by Sandra Cisneros is a clear example of these characteristics by bringing together life in Mexico and the United States. The reader gets the opportunity to view both sides of Cleofilas, the protagonist of the short story, culture as she moves to a new place with her new husband Juan Pedro. She enjoys watching telenovelas because she knows her life will never measure up to the lives of beautiful women from the telenovelas. Cleofilas begins to encounter a dramatic situation by living with an abusive husband and being dominated by men. In the Latin society a common myth is the La Llorona, the weeping woman that Cleofilas seems to encounter. We will write a custom essay sample on Woman Hollering Creek or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Recognizing the elements of Mexican culture is important in understanding Cisneros’s short story â€Å"Woman Hollering Creek. † The telenovelas condition Latina females in their views about romance. The television shows describe the love and life many girls anticipate as they grow up to be young women. For example, Cleofilas wanted her life to be of â€Å"passion in its purest crystalline essence† (Cisneros 239). Before getting married, Cleofilas’ life consisted of never ending chores, putting up with her brothers and her father’s complaining. She did not have the life that she sought. When she married Juan Pedro, she thought her life would shift and be like the ones from the telenovelas. The influence of beautiful women in the soap operas is also seen when Cleofilas decides to make a change: â€Å"Does she dye her hair you think? (Cisneros 239) Cleofilas’ decision to dye her hair shows that she is not content with her looks and appearance. She has an image that women from the telenovelas possess wonderful lives in both love and romance, only because they are beautiful and dye their hair like â€Å"Lucia Mendez† (239). Cleofilas’ husban d doesn’t appear to look like the handsome men from the soap operas: â€Å"His face still scarred from acne†¦this man who farts and belches and snores as well†¦who doesn’t care at all for the telenovelas† (Cisneros 241). This shows that Cleofilas wants her husband to watch the soap operas and be influenced by them like she is. The fact that Cleofilas mentions he does not like the soap operas shows how much she desires for her husband to be more like the men in the telenovelas. Having a different name would have probably made a difference in Cleofilas’ life: â€Å"Somehow she would have to change her name to Topazio, or Yesenia, Cristal, Adriana, Stefania, Andrea, or something more poetic†(Cisneros 243). Cleofilas thought that good things happened to women who were named after jewels, nothing good would happen to a girl with a name like Cleofilas. From the very beginning, Cisneros exposes the control of the father, over to his daughter. In Mexico and the United States, the life of Cleofilas is marked by a male-dominated society: â€Å"†¦look south, and dream of returning to the chores that never ended, six good-for-nothing brothers and one old man complaining† (248). In Cleofilas’s family, their conservative views about women mean that all the boys are outside helping their father, and women are virtual prisoners inside their homes, doing chores. In these times, women are not even allowed to be functioning members of society, just tend to their husbands. The men ask something, and the women obediently do it. In addition, Cisneros’s own life experiences reflect their concept: â€Å"‘Born in Chicago in 1954, Cisneros grew up with six brothers and one father, or â€Å"seven fathers,† as she puts it’† (â€Å"Becoming a Latina Writer† 247). She also wrote that she was the â€Å"keeper of six swans,† as she ironically found out her name was translated to the meaning: â€Å"Keeper of the Swans† (â€Å"Becoming a Latina Writer† 247). Men have a tendency to physically abuse the women, and the women have to take it: â€Å"But when the time came, and he slapped once, and again and again; until the lip split and bled and orchard of blood, she didn’t fight back, she didn’t break into tears†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Cisneros 240). In this type of alpha-male household, the man wears the pants, and he is able to get away with abusing his wife or daughter(s). This is the cruel fate of Cleofilas’s future. She was going to have to tough it out, every time that Juan Pedro got drunk and laid a hand on Cleofilas. She is tough, considering how much abuse she has to take. The city was even a man’s world, where the women were never outside, just stayed home, cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children: â€Å"Because the towns are built to you have to depend on husbands. Or stay home† (242). Even then, it was considered taboo to have a woman in the workforce that was predominantly male. Unfortunately, in those times, a woman’s place in the world was a caretaker for the home and the children, according to men who lived in those times. Cleofilas has spent her entire life trapped in a world that conditions her to see herself as inferior, and to feel that males, fathers, husbands, or brothers are somehow superior beings that she must serve and honor. The myth of the La Llorona tale plays an important role in the story â€Å"Woman Hollering Creek. † Although the myth has many versions, the general idea is of a woman who is crying for the lover who has abandoned her and for her children that she has drowned in the river. The woman then is condemned to roam eternally looking for her dead children (â€Å"La Llorona: The Weeping woman† 1).

Planning Family Ministry

Planning Family Ministry The book, Planning Family Ministry, a guide for a teaching church was written by Joe H. Leonard Jr. in 1982 and pressed in the Judson Press. It includes 63 pages. This book is divided into six chapters; The Tasks of Family MinistryThe Content and Skill Areas of Family MinistryThe Biblical Foundation of Family MinistryChanging Families and Family MinistrySteps to Planning MinistriesToward a Comprehensive Family Ministry. The purpose of this book is to provide guidance to local church leaders, lay and ordained, who want to develop programs of family ministry. It is meant to be practical and usable in local churches of all sizes. An important assumption that underlies the planning suggestions offered in this book is that many, perhaps most, local churches will need to cooperate with other congregations and community groups in order to provide the kinds of family ministry programs that are needed.English: This is a map of first century Iudaea Pro...A cooperative approach to family ministry is not a weakness, but strength. An important conviction underlying this book is that a Christian family is not an end in itself. A Christian family is a laboratory for producing "citizens of the kingdom." A Christian family is a school, or a missionary enterprise. The goal of Christian family life is not solely to create a family which functions in a healthy manner but also to help the world become a fit place for the Spirit of God to dwell.Chapter 1The Tasks of Family MinistryA teaching church nurtures persons in Christian growth. A commitment to nurturing persons in Christian growth necessarily means a concern for the quality of life within family units. Family ministry is an essential, ongoing ministry for a teaching church. Everyone is part of a family in some sense. Family ministry is all the efforts of...

Different between large city and small city Research Paper

Different between large city and small city - Research Paper Example Apparent differences between New York City and Terre Haute are mainly due to the people that inhibit those cities. Being a large and popular city New York City is home to many famous Hollywood celebrities and is in full swing from morning to midnight. New York City has a plethora of malls situated in its streets including Trump Tower, Kings Plaza Shopping Center and Marina, Manhattan Mall, and Queens Center just to name a few. Terre Haute may lack in activities however it also has numerous malls including Honey Creek Mall, Nancy’s Downtown Mall, and Shadylane Antique Mall while some are located far off. Also, transportation system and the way of getting to places are different in the two cities. For instance, having a large population traffic jams are quite common in New York City due to congestion. According to Aaron Couch, New York City dwellers experience at least 42 hours of delay per year (n.pag.). As a result people prefer travelling by public transport: bus, subway, tax i, etc. Terre Haute, on the other hand, has a relatively less occurrence of severe traffic jams as compared to New York City. Overall, there are so many activities a person could do and there are numerous places to go to in New York City while Terre Haute has a limited number of activities for recreation and entertainment. However, Terre Haute beats NYC to traffic congestions. One of the major advantages for a person living in Terre Haute is the cost of living there. It is significantly lower than the one for New York City. Apartment rents are way cheaper in Terre Haute. In New York City the monthly apartment rent for a one bedroom apartment ranges from $2370 to $3100 (Numbeo, n.pag.) as compared to $425 to $500 for a one bedroom apartment in Terre Haute. Also, the costs incurred due to restaurant, market, transportation, monthly utility bills, sports, leisure, clothing, and rent amounts to a huge chunk of the salary of a New Yorker. All these expenses are significantly low for a pe rson living in Terre Haute. If asked about people’s preferences then a person would prefer to live in New York City despite its high cost of living. The apparent reason is that Terre Haute is a small city and hence has lesser job opportunities and subsequently a lower pay rate. With the perks and benefits and the standards of living one would enjoy in New York City, these are almost absent in Terre Haute. Therefore, despite the low cost of living more people prefer to live in New York City. High crime rates have often been associated with New York City. The reason is quite straightforward. Being a large and populous city there are more opportunities of crimes including robbery, homicide, rape, motor vehicle theft, assaults, and so on. Also, since the city houses richer people demographically the crime rate is higher than any smaller city like Terre Haute. In fact, Terre Haute has a significantly low crime rate even though a prison is there for wrong doers. However, to not men tion the decreasing crime rate in New York City would be unfair. There has been a decline in the crime rate from 1999 to 2011 from 459.9 to 254.5 (City Data, n.pag.). Many consider this decline a mystery while others have put forward many reasons for this decline in the crime rate including the change in policies, growth in the number of police force, and so on. Even with this plummeting crime rate, Terre Haute still has a very low crime rate as compared to New York City

Public Relation Research Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Public Relation Research - Essay Example Consequently, the basis of defining media issues should and will always revolve around conveyance of vital, lifesaving information to the general populace in a responsible, fact-based manner which is not just strong enough but also convincing enough to motivate them to take appropriate action without subjecting them to risks. Way back in in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew paid a visit to south Florida, the residents in awe as miles and miles of traffic evacuated the people. Nonetheless, persons who missed the media report, had no information as to who was evacuating who and where. Such underlies the importance of the media and highlights what constitutes a media issue. The article â€Å"Boral demolishes another 700 jobs† highlights a major societal issues and as qualifies as a media issue. It looks at two major public interest areas hit by crisis, thanks to economic recession. These include the employment and the housing development sector. More often than not, every member of the public has interest in knowing the changing employment trends as well as the changes affecting the housing sector. These are both areas which directly touch on the day to day life of the citizens. What makes these issues of interests to the media is the public interest they elicit. The report for the case witnessed in Boral and the possibility of job losses, it is indicative of the hard economic times and spells a possibility of other related or even unrelated industries follow trend to salvage themselves. It reveals information which could have a rippling effect across the local divide. In a related piece, Wheeldon (2012) highlights not just Boral but also brings in Fletcher, both of which are construction related industry. This is a warning to the public of negative effects within the industry and the need to take contingency measures. Public relations have a lot to do with communication of occurrence to the general public. It helps the public get a clear picture of some special o ccurrence within an organization and in most cases attempt to justify the actions. This is summarized in the statement, â€Å"When a company spends hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars to sponsor an event, it seems rather foolish to me not to spend the additional relatively small amount required to tell people you're doing so. Public relations are the final ingredient required to ensure the success of the buy; to fail to use PR seems kind of like buying a car without the engine; it still looks pretty but it won't go very far (Cox & Avila, 2008).† In general, it focuses on justifying an action taken by an organization more especially if the action taken touches on the lives of the public. In this case, the reported incident reports loss of employment to hundreds of employs and probably other many who directly relay on the ones who lose their employment. Other than the loss of employment, it justifies its position and explains that the cut will not affect its produ ction as it will focus on areas where redundancy has been recorded in the past (Kylie, 2013). This is what makes it public relations. It explains a situation, justifies the situation and explains the possible impact of the situation. A number of public concern issues are raised in the article. Primary ‘publics’ concerned with the issue A number of stakeholders are will find interest in the communications made in the article. The first groups of interested parties are the employees. The employees are

But still it have to extend its market in some other countries . I want to pursue similar operating strategies that have succeded in other country Marketing Strategy (ANSOFF) ANSOFF product market is a marketing tool created by Igore Ansoff matrix provide four different growth strategies market penetration, market development, product development and diversification. Market penetration : the company entering with its current product to increase its market share is a market penetration. By advertising or by convincing current consumer or clients to use more of the products or service is the way to achieve this and it can be least risky for company to grow its market. Product development: The new product is marketed out to their existing customer by developing and innovating new products offering to replace existing ones . As product is new it can carry more risk than simply attempting to increase market share. Market development: If the company or the firms is expanding its product to different customers to earn more revenue for the firms this is marketing development. The best example for this is lucozated which was first marketed for sick children but later rebranded to target athletics. Diversification: it requires both product and market development and can be outside the core competency hence it is the most risky of the growth strategy. Market analysis The world is divided into 100 of sovereign nations and each nation have a potential market for products of international firms. Marketing analysis concerns with two different task considering the size of existing markets and forecasting the size of future markets. Before entering into a new market we should study the several factors like customs, tastes, the trade restriction, collecton of national statistics. Taking SABMiller to a new market involves the marketing analysis of the particular place or the chosen country. SABMiller has operated its product in some asian market including china, India, Vietnam Australia. As an international marketing manager I would like to expand my company in some asian countries. Among asian countries Im going to focus on four Asian countries, among these Im going to choose one for the future venture of my company: Nepal India Pakistan Korea 1) Nepal: Nepal is a small developing country situated between two leading countries china and india with an area 147181 sq. km and it has 30 million population. Pest analysis for Nepal Political(p): until 1990 Nepal was running under monarchy. Since from last two decades it has several political changes. The political stability of Nepal is not strong so it keeps on changing in every short period of time . due to which it has its direct impact on country GDP and other part. Economic(E): Nepal is an agriculture country 80% people depends on agriculture . economic development in social service has not made dramatic progress. young and educate people migrate to other countries in search of jobs and employment. it is a Hindu country. About 80% of the people follow Hinduism . According to Hindu religion people they dont drink alcohol. According to social belief and behaviours people they dont drink and allow alcohol in their social life. Technological: IT a poor developing countries due to political instability and lack of skilled man power country lacks technology. 2) India: SABMiller enter in Indian market in july 2000 with acquisition of jv . and it has occupied 1/3 indian market share of beer . its already in india so I want to take my company to other part of the asia. 3) Pakistan: the estimated population of Pakistan is 170.6 million. Pakistan GDP is us$167 billions. Because of the unhappy consumer credit market, slow movement of civic sector programmes, security risk Pakistan economic growth faced a serious set back in 2009. shortage of energy and power do not let the boom entered into the industrial sector. Government is unable to make different and identify the developed and non developed budget. And the major problem of the Pakistan is security .so I cant extend my market over there for this reason. 4) South Korea South Korea has a republic government with power shared between president legislation and court. South korea has a good relation with many international foroms . the republic of korea maintains diplomatic relations with more thn 170 countries and broad a network of trading relationship .Is in 15th position in the world GDP rate. Method to enter : joint venture I m going to enter into the Korean beer market by joint venture . with the help of one of the local firm I m gong to enter with my miller lite brand. This makes me easier to enter into the new market with low risk in my business. It helps to access me to local borrowing power and resources through participation of national partner. Advantages of Joint Ventures Offers opportunities to the company to get new abilities Helps to enter into a new geological market and helps to achieve new technological information Joint venture also makes low risk by sharing by sharing the economic risk with co venture In order to grow into the new market we need resources in the form of method technology and approach, it open the enue for such needs. Offers a creative way for company to exit from non core corporation Disadvantages of Joint Ventures It can take a long time or attempt to built a relationship or partnering a right partner Different culture and management way can bring poor result Co venture or partners dont offer enough leadership Can be imbalance in levels of expertise Have to agree in lot of things and these can cause this venture fall apart The profit made by you will be shared Task 4: Implementation (4Ps of marketing) The marketing decision is generally controlled by 4 categories: product, price, place, promotion. Product: if u going to do business you have to produce a product that the people going to buy. People in korea are fond of different drinks. I m going to take by brand miller lite in korea market. It has won the best world beer cup gold medal for best American style light lager in 1996, 1998, 2002 and in 2006. Price: the price must be high enough to cover the cost but it doesnt mean that it should be really high. The price of this product will be in favour to all category people so that they can enjoy its taste . Place: it will be the first market entry in Korean brewery . I want to place my product in every public place where they can enjoy and have a fun like restaurant, bar , local shops, store etc. so that I can take focus from the customer. Promotions: customer have to be made aware of the product. So I m going to advertise my product in television, papers, internet, leaflets etc so that i can make more space in he market share. Conclusion: people in the society wants different product with new taste . People of the todays world are more conscious about product brand this shows that people are conscious about their choice , health and money. Henry VI of England :: essays research papers fc

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Could you imagine yourself becoming the leader of a country at merely the age of nine months old? King Henry VI of England did it. Henry was the only son of King Henry V and Catherine of Valois (Wikipedia). By the time Henry V died, he had not only consolidated power as the King of England, but had also effectively accomplished what generations of his ancestors had failed to achieve through decades of war: unification of the crowns of England and France (Wikipedia). For that one single victory by Henry V, he became very popular for that effort. By the sounds of it, Henry was an outseanding King and loved by the people. His son, Henry VI, seemingly had to follow in his fathers footsteps and perhaps do something even greater than his now deceased father. There was only one problem: How can you run a country when you are only a child? England was okay after the death of Henry V because Henry VI had regents that ran the country for him. Under normal circumstances of this magnitude, the wife of a deceased King ran the country, but the English did not want Catherine of Valois to run the country for the simple fact that she was French; so therefore they gave the power to this infant in hopes of greatness. Because young Henry was too young to run the country and had regents to run the country for him until he became of age, Catherine made sure that her son was well-educated. While politics and foreign policies were being negotiated by Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, Bishop Henry Beaufort, and John, Duke of Bedford, young Henry VI was either learning or being told to go play (Crow). Henry was finally officially crowned King of England at Westminister Abbey on November 6, 1429 at the age of eight and King of France at Notre Dame in Paris on December 16, 1431. Henry did not assume the reins of government until he was declared of age in 1437 (Wikipedia).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For the simple fact that when Henry VI was younger and not allowed to take an active role in leading England, he did not really care about running the country. Henry was such a spiritually deep man that he lacked the worldly wisdom necessary to allow him to rule effectively (Wikipedia). Henry was more of an indecisive pushover.

To focus firmly on the â€Å"you† view, writers should scrub all uses of I and we from their writing. Do you agree or disagree? Why? I disagree with writers scrubbing out all uses of I and we from their writing, but they should try to use those words as little as possible. It is true as stated In the book the catchiest words you can use are you and your. When we as consumers, see an ad or talk to a representative, we want to know how or where we are being benefited ND not see or hear a bunch of Xi's or woe's.The flipped of removing those words are responses possibly becoming too wordy. There Is an example In the book on peg. 43 that I have put below where I believe the ‘You† view would have to be changed to; [Would you mind releasing your account number so your records can be located and this problem of yours can be solved? ] I changed It this way because If removing those two words you would also have to remove me as well. Now I believe It does not sound as polite as the original change. Some Xi's or woe's are necessary to sound polite and let consumers know that although this is about them, the business is not completely removed from interacting with them. â€Å"l/We† View â€Å"You† View I need your account number before I can do anything Would you mind giving me your account number so that I can locate your records and help you solve this problem?

Compare and Contrast Between Elderly and Young Adults essays

Compare and Contrast Between Elderly and Young Adults essays Compare/Contrast Old/Young There are many similarities as well as differences between elderly people and young adults. Older people seem to be more set in their ways. They also seem to know much more in general about most everything. Young adults, on the other hand seem to have a much broader outlook on life. The most common factor in both of these groups it seems is the overwhelming knack for being narrow: You will hear from the majority of young adults, I will be rich someday but an older adult will say, Money isnt everything, Im looking forward to retirement. Young adults as well as the elderly both think they know everything. The adage Wisdom comes with age can be a very true statement. It is a natural assumption that as we live longer and experience more in life, we would become wise to the ways of the world. The funny thing is, this does not always happen. If you listen to the elderly, many do become wise; but many others (as with music tastes) seem to get stuck in their youth, but yet think they are all wise. They cant seem to see the world changing around them. Young adults, because the world is changing so fast and information is so readily available, do know a...

Indian economy Essays

Indian economy Essays Indian economy Essay Indian economy Essay A year of improvement and surprises Indias growth environment has been on a roller coaster ride since the credit crisis. After growing at a healthy rate of 8. 9%YoY (average) during 2004-07, the growth will decelerate sharply to a near-decade low of 4. 8%YoY in FY14 according to our estimates. While we believe that growth in India is stabilising, the recovery will be very gradual. We expect Indias GDP growth to pick up only modestly to 5. 4%YoY in FYI 5 and further to 6. 1%YoY in FY16. For this recovery to sustain without reigniting he macro stability risks, the investment cycle needs to pick up ahead of consumption. We believe the parliamentary elections due in May 2014 will be the next catalyst. Momentum to pick up pace post elections We have assumed a stable coalition government in the next parliamentary election as our base case scenario. While the economy is showing some incipient signs of revival, the recovery does not seem to be broad based. We expect external demand to be the key growth driver in FYI 5 while consumption and investments are likely to stabilise at ow levels. We also expect some pick up in capex trend largely on government initiatives to clear logjams to speed up project implementation. However, the high cost of capital to manage inflationary pressures, a cut in government spending to meet deficit targets, political uncertainty constraining the capex cycle recovery and a lack of structural reforms will continue to weigh on overall growth expectations over the next 6-9 months, in our view. We expect investments mainly the private corporate apex to show a credible improvement only in FY16 once political uncertainty is resolved. Macro stability risks seem to be improving on the margin The delay in QE tapering by the Fed and quick measures taken by the Indian policymakers including: (a) clamp down on gold imports; (b) measures to attract dollar deposits via the FX swap window; (c) speeding up project implementation in the investment space; and, (d) a sustained increase in diesel prices have all helped boost investor sentiment, providing some breathing space near term. However, we elieve inflationary pressures will continue to dominate investors concern over the coming months. Upside and downside risks to our outlook The upside and downside risks to our growth estimates stem from (a) the pace of QE tapering and rise in US real rates; (b) the outcome of next years parliamentary elections; and, (c) inflation, mainly CPI. While a stable government should help push the much needed policy reforms to bring the economy back on the growth track, a weak coalition (Congress-led or BJP-led) or a Third-Front government might lack the olitical will to undertake reforms and boost investor/business confidence. We believe the upside risks (†70-90bps) to our growth forecasts stem from (a) gradual rise in US real rates and (b) a clear majority in the parliamentary elections and/or (c) faster than expected moderation in core CPI inflation. The downside risks (†80-100bps) include a faster rise in US real rates and/or a weak election outcome, which would increase uncertainty and stall the reform momentum. Indian economy By ankurgl 234

Free Trade and Fair Trade Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Free Trade and Fair Trade - Essay Example This unequivocal position, he views any and all tariffs as anathema to the enjoyment of the benefits of free trade, and an injustice to the consumer who deserves access to the best valued goods and services at the most economical prices. Milton believes that the consumer’s interest is paramount, and any other policy consideration inconsistent-valued his interest is distortionary. An interesting assertion in the article is the principle attributed by Friedman to Adam Smith, that citizens from a nation benefit from importing as much as it can and exporting as little as possible. Friedman interprets this as getting as much value as possible with deploying as little, thus accumulating value within the country’s borders. Fried Fair Trade. Stiglitz and Charlton proceed on the premise that trade can be a positive force for development. However, it is their position that liberalization should be carefully managed. The position of Stiglitz and Charlton is that the Washington Con sensus prescribed developing countries to expeditiously adopt a system of reduced tariffs and trade barriers, entailed unforeseen cost to these countries in what amounted to the unwarranted rapid and indiscriminate liberalization of their markets. The undue haste and lack of careful stewardship in the adoption of free trade policies have resulted to an unfair advantage on the part of developed countries. For instance, after the Uruguay Round, developed countries came away with a disproportionately greater part of the gains particularly on the issues of the reduction of textile protection and of tariff and subsidy reduction on agricultural goods. This left developing countries at a gross disadvantage for which they met succeeding trade negotiations with much less enthusiasm and volition.
